Code of Conduct

Jackknife Brewing Code of Conduct

Welcome to the dungeon! This is some information that wraps up a bunch of our core codes of conduct into one place. We’re happy to display this as we take our stand to initiate change in the brewing industry as a whole.

We work hard at fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all customers and staff here at the shop and we don’t take this lightly. If we’re not having fun, what the hell are we doing here right?

Jackknife is built on the foundation of people first, profits second. We know that if we take care of our staff and keep everyone stoked, working hard won’t feel like work. We are a small team and will continue to keep it this way in order to maintain a close-knit team and a friendly, family-style atmosphere. We give all the fucks here and we want our team to succeed both in and out of the Jackknife dungeon.

That being said, our staff are held to a pretty high standard and we only select the highest quality people to work alongside us. We have certain expectations that need to be met both in and outside of the shop.

Ambassadors of the Jackknife banner carry our torch out into the world, spreading the stoke that is Weird Beer and Classic Pizza. In being part of our small team, our staff are recognized easily throughout the valley and the province and our reputation for being rad should carry through with interactions with other breweries and restaurants and fellow humans. We are continuously fostering relationships with other like-minded individuals and our staff are a reflection of this.

OUR CONDUCT

This may be new or old news but the beer industry has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to equity and diversity. How we address those around us helps create a more inclusive environment. We recognize that not everyone identifies in the same way. For this we need to increase our vocabulary and take a stand to become more inclusive as a whole. We practice what we preach here, we’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be better every day.

The following examples will help us all become better at being more inclusive. This is a work-in-process and it always should be as we strive to be more inclusive.

- We use gender-neutral signage for our bathrooms and, besides our wheelchair accessible washrooms, we make no distinction between them. All are simply marked with a knife. All are welcome and no-one should be made to feel uncomfortable.

- When addressing guests, we use gender-neutral language – “Hey folks”, “Hi everyone” etc. as opposed to “ladies,” “gentlemen,” “dudes,” etc. We do not assume pronouns or gender identities.

- We have a zero tolerance policy for racist, sexist, transphobic and/or homophobic language here at the brewery. FULL STOP. If we have a customer exhibiting these behaviours, we will ask them to leave, and we will take the necessary means to remove them if needed. This is a private business and we make the rules. If you notice these behaviours in our space, we fully support you in asking these folks to take their bigotry elsewhere or talk to our staff.

This representation is key to our interactions with patrons. We don’t just serve beer and pizza here, we provide an atmosphere that is unique and welcoming. We put this on our door and we stand by it wholeheartedly: Jackknife is a safe space for BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ folks in a valley that traditionally caters to a way more white, cisgendered population. Everyone is treated equally here and there are no stupid questions. We expect all of our staff to uphold a level of professionalism that is welcoming and educational. No. Bad. Vibes.

All of our staff have read and signed off on these codes of conduct to increase solidarity on these issues as a whole. Our team is built of extraordinary individuals and I couldn’t be happier to have them in my life.
