Okanagan Terroir meets Nordic Brewing

Here at the shop we’re a bunch of fuckin nerds, but not in the traditional sense, we nerd out on terroir. We have a big passion for the brewing community and seek out like minded brewers, vintners, cider makers, distillers and just good humans from all REALMS to collaborate with.

we use North Eastern farmhouse yeasts to ferment all of our beers, hailing from Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and the majority coming from Norway, the infamous Kveik.

Kveik is a series of sometimes centuries-old yeasts, cultivated by Norwegian farmhouse brewers. These strains not only provide our beer with a unique foundation, but are also the core to our use of ancient brewing techniques and traditions, like baking mashes, barrel fermentation, raw ales and using locally foraged ingredients like spruce, juniper and every berry we can get our hands on in the woods.

We combine these nordic influences with our own west coast flavour profiles and local ingredients to make beers that ring true to our valley where we have called home for generations. Skal friends!

Please check the @JACKKNIFEMENU Instagram for what’s pouring this week!

here are just some of the past and present brews.

Fundraising Beers!

Making change one glass of beer at a time.

Brave Noise

Brewed to Raise funds for the Living Positive Resource Center in Kelowna, BC. $5,500 Raised to Date!

A Blackberry Hazy Pale Ale, it's bright, and tropical with a bit of that classic blackberry pucker that ends in a crisp finish.

The Brave Noise collab campaign raises awareness about the shitty underbelly of the brewing world, because it, like many industries, is riddled with shitty owners and employees who have made work environments hell for many individuals. We agree that this needs to come to light so that it can stop.

We've said from day one, JACKKNIFE IS A SAFE SPACE. Some of us might look a little rough around the edges and you may get blasted with heavy metal once you step inside our doors, but by all means we're doing our damnedest to hold this ground and maintain zero tolerance for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and any other ism that perpetuates hate. Cheers!

Celebrating Sisters

Our Indigenous Brew Day collab brew with our friends Tessa, Howie and Lance - Westbank, BC

Raising funds and awareness for local MMIW initiatives in the Okanagan Valley. $1,800 Donated to date!

We're super stoked to have brewed this pale ale, fermented in fresh empty Zweigelt barrels from Arrowleaf Cellars in Winfield. We split the batch up a few different ways with locally foraged ingredients from the Okanagan. We used Rosehips, Juniper, Spruce tips, Soapberries and Labrador tea Leaves!

Kutya

Brewed with our friends Mike and Don - Unleashed Brewing, Kelowna, BC

Raising funds for the war relief efforts in Ukraine through Pravda Brewing in Lviv, and the Outreach International group an organization that helps to support LGBTQ+ folks who are displaced by the war.

A lemon honey wheat ale inspired by a Christmas dish that Mike's dad, Don would make every year. We brewed this glorious sweet, zesty golden ale with loads of white wheat and oats, then we conditioned it on zested / smashed lemons and buckets of local honey.

Bear Hug

Brewed with our friends Matt Cavers and Sam McCartney - 101 Brewhouse + Distillery, Gibsons, BC
Blackberry oatmeal IPA

B-Road

Brewed with our friend Evan Cronshaw - Whitetooth Brewing, Golden BC

a Belgian barleywine inspired by Brad's grandad who passed away recently. He famously built most of the ski hill roads in the interior as well as the access roads to Kinbasket Lake. He'd probably say something like "it's no Molson, but you'll get there one day." Cheers Grandad Bruce, you're a fuckin legend.

Black Gold

Brewed with our friends Natasha and Kyle - Last Best Brewing, Calgary, AB

We traveled long and far to reach our old flat land friends. We brewed a monster stout that we stained with piles and piles of Midnight Wheat, creating a light but coveted stout that could be crushed by any of the Beverly Hillbillies or their upscale neighbours. Stay tuned for “Texas Tea”

SKåL

Brewed with our friends Craig and Josh - Torchlight Brewing, Nelson, BC

One of our first collabs, the guys invited us down to harness the power of the vikings to make a summer crusher ipa that would make Thor weep with joy. Packed full of Galaxy hops and oats.

Berry Banshee is a blackberry/raspberry IPA with a big creamy mouth feel, piles of berry on the nose and a hint of vanilla on the finish.

Triple Rye IPA

Brewed with our friend Garritt Lalonde - Sooke Oceanside Brewing (S.O.B.)

We hiked all the way out to Sooke to brew one of the last brews, on one of the smallest commercial brewhouses in BC. For years Brad and Garritt were some of the few brewers cranking out beer on tiny hand-built brewhouses. This beer was thrown on tap in their old garage tasting room and was enjoyed by the fine locals of the misty coastal town.

Devilock

Brewed with our friends Craig, Josh and Jade - Torchlight Brewing, Nelson, BC

A bastardized version of a pale ale with a Nordic twist. A kick of rye and enough passionfruit aroma to make a grave digger cry.

Witness!

brewed with Our Friend Chris - Kettle River Brewing, Kelowna, BC

Listen up blood bags! This is the first of our Mad Max inspired series that's been a dream for a long, long time. A choke cherry double IPA. Fermented and aged in red wine barrels, it's round, fruity and even a bit tropical. Once the fruit punches you in the face hole, you're left with the ever increasing dryness of the choke cherries as if you're in the Namibian desert. Big thanks to Brad’s grandparents for harvesting 55lbs of cherries from Winfield!

Mass Collider

Brewed with our friends Mike and Brad - Nomad Cider, Summerland, BC

A Nordic graf that we now make every fall. We take fresh pressed desert apples (That day), bombed it into the kettle, boiled it with some tropical hops and co-fermented it. This wicked collision of flavours from the beer and cider world starts out crisp and bright with that cider zing that slowly fades into a creamy crumbly malt finish.

Reign in Kriek

Brewed with our friends Aaron and Stefan - Iron Road Brewing, Kamloops, BC

Our take on a traditional style sour cherry ale. Primarily fermented on sour cherries and aged on dark cherries in fresh empty red wine barrels with Brett L for 7 months. Of course we used some kveik in there too and a handful or two of hops to keep it classic.

Postmortem

Brewed with our friends Aaron and Stephan - Iron Road Brewing, Kamloops, BC

A sour cherry wheat ale fermented with Simonaitis kveik yeast from @escarpmentlabs it's super soft and creamy with big cherry pie notes.

Void Chaser

Brewed with our friend and colleague Jazz - Jackknife Brewing, Kelowna, BC

Our front of house manager Jazz and Brad headed into the snow and harvested the last of the years rosehips. Brewing up a rosehip, blueberry rye ale. Perfect for the winter, it's light and spicy with dried berry notes. Aromas of stone fruit and second helpings of pie are abundant. Chase the void.

Mustafar Mangler

Brewed with our friend Dave - Kelowna Beer Institute, Kelowna, BC

A black IPA that Vader himself would crush. It's got some zesty piney action that fades into a smooth creamy finish accented by a hint of chocolate malt.

Lotan’s Maw

Brewed With our friends Annika and James - Kelowna, BC

We brought in red wine barrels and inoculated each one with fresh kveik chips straight from Norway. These more rustic and raw strains haven’t seen a lab and express a very earthy, and orchard fruit character that you would see in traditional brewing in Northern Europe. A tropical fruit forward red ale with a kick of rye. These non cultured strains bring bright fruit and spice character complimented by the Zweigelt barrels that held them for months.

Resting Witch Face I.

Brewed By the women of Jackknife for international Women’s day! - Jackknife Brewing, BC

We couldn't be more stoked on these total rippers we have on our team. They're all powerful, strong and independent women who don't take shit and they shouldn't have to. They brewed up this killer beer with a killer name just never ask them to smile or you might get hexed!

A gin ISA brewed with juniper, spruce tips and sumac, it's been conditioning on blood orange and lime zest for a couple of weeks and it will definitely scratch your gin and tonic itch!

Resting WItch Face II.

Brewed By the women of Jackknife for international Women’s day! - Jackknife Brewing, BC

A black currant, blueberry farmhouse ale. Somewhere along the lines of a hoppy fruited Saison.

Barbegazi’s Howl

Brewed with our friend Manny - Arrowleaf Cellars, Winfield, BC

A white IPA blended with a spontaneously fermented Piquette base. Bright tropical flavours swirl and meld into a dry light fruitiness from the Bacchus grape skins. Since the Zuppiger family is from Switzerland we named this beer after a small mountain creature that dwells in the Swiss Alps.

ROMULAN JOE'S PSYCHEDELIC SESSION IPA

Brewed with our Friend Joe - Kind Brewing, Westbank, BC

Our 420 collab, brewed with a bit of white wheat and oats to give this patio season beer a bit of body. Bright tropical five alive citrus comes out on the nose thanks to the Citiva hops.

This… Is My BOOMSTICK!

Brewed With our friends Ross, Scott, Landon and Church - Cannery Brewing, Penticton, BC

An imperial rye ale conditioned on piles of blueberries drops today! packed full of smooth spice from three different kinds of rye. It's taken down a notch by a velvety smooth sweetness and chased by a light blueberry note at the end. This beast would make Ash shiver after a glass. Shop smart,

shop S-Mart.

4 On The Floor

Brewed with our friends Adam. and Tyler - BNA Brewing, Kelowna, BC

A meyer lemon, lime wheat ale. It's got some lazer puckering tartness that mellows into the tropics, reminding you of blue skies and beaches.

WINFIELD WILD!

Brewed with Brad’s Grandparents (our favourite foragers) - Winfield, BC

A barrel fermented mix culture ale blended with 100lbs of spontaneously fermented choke cherries. We pitched some dried kveik straight from Stranda, Norway into the barrel and let it get to work and age for 2 months. Expect the unexpected with this wild beast, aromas of fruit wine and oak are balanced by spice and fruit rounded out by a slight tartness without piles of acidity.

Tired As Fuck

Brewed with our friend Nate - Bright Jenny Coffee, Kelowna, BC

An imperial espresso stout brewed with our buddy, the coffee wizard, Nate from @brightjennycoffee right here in the north end. We stacked layers of chocolate, caramel and vanilla into a heavy duty full bodied stout and conditioned it all on top of Bright Jenny's fresh roasted Smoke & Mirrors beans. It's smooth, creamy and will be sure to warm your black soul.

Nightmare Fuel

Brewed WIth our Friends Richie, Shaun and Darla - Copper Brewing, Kelowna, BC

Take all the flavours of a deep rich fresh Okanagan black currant pie, blend and boil them together for hours and hours. Send it into bretted barrels, bury it in the deepest darkest parts of the dungeon and wait.... The beast has awoken and was served at both of our breweries this past winter. Bringing forth graham cracker, heavy dark fruit character with rich molasses notes. Backed by roast and hints of vanilla, this smooth demon will make you toss and turn all night with dreams of coming back for more!

Hunting Lodge

Brewed with our friend Dave - Dave’s Mowing (You grow it I mow it) Winfield, BC

A Nordic juniper lager. We brewed this beer in honour of the small cabin we built in the woods when we were young. The hunting lodge lives on! Big tropical aroma followed up by bright gin like notes that finish with that classic crisp lager malt backbone.

Wail of the Bukavac

Brewed with our friends AAron and Stefan - Iron Road Brewing, Kamloops, BC

It's a Black Eastern European Imperial Farmhouse IPA, hey, it says "weird beer" on the side of the fuckin building! Pitch black with a spicy note right off the bat that quickly turns into the tropics. All fading into a nice smooth bitterness and heat. This beast shrieks into the night, beckoning you to take the plunge...

MEGATHERIUM'S RAGE!

A big gnarly imperial rye stout we brewed with our buddy John way back in July. Named after the giant barbarian sloths of old, this absolute beast is deep, rich and slightly fruity with hits of dulce de leche and chocolate.

Rip Your Heard Out

Brewed With our Friends Matt and Warren - Gibsons, Kelowna, BC

A red wine barrel aged rhubarb crumble red ale. Don't let that insane group of words fool you, this monster packs in piles of bright light rhubarb notes that are backed up by a light biscuity malt bill. To stack on the fruit character we fired this in fresh empty red wine barrels from the south Okanagan to age for a few months and really round out. Behold, a tart, fruity beast ready to pull those heartstrings right out!

Rancor’s Rage

Brewed with our friend Dave - Kelowna Beer Institute, Kelowna, BC

A red rye ale fermented with one of our kveik yeast blends. We let it hang in whiskey barrels that previously housed Dave's ripper dopplebock. Stacking layer upon layer of light caramely malt notes and just a hint of residual whiskey character. It's all flavour without the big bite!

Part VIII - Our 8th turn of our continuously barrel fermented wheat ale. This ever evolving blend of barrels was conditioned on 50 lbs of sliced and diced rhubarb that we collected from a few different friends in the valley. It's soft and crisp with a bit of that classic rhubarb dryness. A complex beer for complex times.
